Auto Insurance for Trucks and Vans

April 20, 2008

People who drive pickup trucks and vans can usually get insurance for these vehicles from any company that also provides automobile insurance, but in this day and age, don’t assume anything. Check with the insurance company first to make sure. If you already have an automobile insured with a certain company, this might be a good place to start. Call your agent and inquire as to what the proper coverage for your truck would be.

You’ll discover than some agents know all about insurance for pickup trucks and vans, while some agents know almost nothing. In this case, you can do a little research and find out for yourself what kind of insurance is required in your state. This is easy to do – just get in touch with the Department of Motor Vehicles in your state either by telephone or on the web. They will be able to tell you exactly what you need to know.

Do some thinking before you decide exactly what types of insurance you need. If you have a large savings account, own real estate or stocks, or own your own home, make sure you have enough liability insurance to protect your assets. There are times when the other party in an accident will try to sue you for ‘pain and suffering’ and if you do not have enough liability insurance to pay off the amount of this lawsuit, you may find yourself forced to sell something you own in order to come up with enough money.

A good way to “window shop” for insurance is to get online and visit the various insurance sites. Most of them are set up to enable you to request a quote easily. It does not take very long to get a quote online, 15 or 20 minutes tops. Sometimes, a web site will let you get quotes from more than one company all at the same time. Getting online quotes can be quicker for you if you have handy all the information that you will need to fill out the online form. Your driver’s license, vehicle registration form, and current insurance form will all be helpful.

Note that not every online insurance company will provide you with an instant quote. Some companies will email them to you, and some will have one of their representatives who lives near you to call and speak to you on the phone. This is a good way to get a feel for the insurance agent and see how easy the company will be to work with.
