RV Insurance – Finding The Right Insurance Deal
May 22nd, 08Insurance is just one of those expenses that are a minor nuisance until you need it. Many associate insurance with health care, homes, and cars but recreational vehicles and motor homes also require insurance. The insurance needs for RVers differ greatly from car or home owners since for many the RV is both a home and a car.
Many auto insurance agencies can not properly cover RVs since they do not fully understand the needs of the RV owners. Many owners who go through regular auto insurance agencies to receive RV coverage will find that the policy does not offer adequate coverage. Auto insurance will not cover injuries at the campsite since, well, cars are not generally used to camp out of. Now, it is possible that your home owner’s insurance may cover your RV since it can be used as a residence but even this will not cover everything that you will need. Homes are not to be involved in highway accident, after all.
The best way to find RV insurance is to go through an insurance agency that specializes in RVs and motor homes. These agencies will understand the special needs and concerns that every RV owner faces. Before you go out and search for RV insurance take some time to figure out what exactly you need from the policy.
Some questions to ask yourself are:
- Will I be living in the RV full time?
- How often will I use the RV?
- Will the RV become my primary residence?
- How many months out of the year do I plan to travel in my RV?
- Will I need any special coverage for expensive equipment or belongings?
You will also need to take into consideration the type of RV you own. A travel trailer will not need the same protection as a large luxury Class A RV. A tow trailer might actually be covered by the primary vehicles insurance policy. When in doubt ask your auto insurance company.
When you determine what type of coverage you may need you will then need to find out what is required from your state or area. Many areas will have a minimum amount of insurance coverage that is required for RV owners. If this is the case it will never hurt to go beyond this minimum requirement especially if you choose to carry passengers and valuables. If the RV is going to be your primary residence you will want to get coverage that allows full replacement in case of an accident or mishap. You may never foresee an incident where such coverage is needed but when it is needed you will be thankful to have it. Cardboard boxes don’t make much of a home now a day. Consider coverage for when the RV is parked at a campsite to protect against injuries or theft.
RVs are special vehicles that require a special type of insurance. Neither home insurance nor car insurance will fully or properly cover the RV and the RV owner’s needs. Take the time and do the research needed to find the appropriate insurance for your RVing needs. If you’re lucky you will never need it. If you do need it, you’ll be lucky to have it.
