Smart Cars Gaining In Popularity
June 6, 2008
Smart Cars, hailed to be the next big thing in the automotive world, has hit the road in the United States with mixed reviews. These small cars have been all the rage in Europe for the past decade and have only recently been making the move to other countries.
The United States started selling Smart Cars in the early part of 2008 though trying to find one will be difficult. Dealers are unable to keep the cars on the lot and the resulting waiting list can be as long as one year. So what is making these cars so desirable? It’s the 60 miles per gallon that is attracting many to trade in their gas guzzlers for this compact wonder.
The Smart Car is only about 8 feet long and seats two so not everyone will be able to use it especially families. This is not deterring consumers, however, who own two vehicles to exchange at least one for the newest and smallest car on America’s road ways.
However, many America consumers ask about the car’s safety first than the gas mileage. Americans are used to big items so seeing the tiny Smart Car is bound to raise questions.
Being a product of Mercedes-Benz, the Smart Car has earned one of the top spots in safety tests.
“…among the smallest cars, the engineers of the Smart did their homework and designed a high level of safety into a very small package,” Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s president, Adrian Lund said.
The Smart Car received a good rating in front end and side impact tests proving that even though the Smart Car is small it doesn’t mean it’s unsafe.
Many see the Smart Car as a great alternative to traditional larger vehicles for inner city driving. Despite skeptical reviews, the Smart Car is being embraced by the American consumer as they rush out to buy this mini marvel, well that is if they can find it.
