Credit History And Auto Insurance

July 12th, 08

These days many insurance companies base their auto insurance premiums, at least partially, on your credit rating and history. If you have managed to diligently build up a good and solid credit rating, then you probably be able to find considerably lower auto insurance rates.

Of course, to achieve a solid history with the credit bureaus takes a considerable amount of time and effort. You have to always ensure that all of your utility and other bills are kept totally open to date. Your credit card and other debts have to be very much under control, with good steady payments, and a balance that never exceeds two thirds of your available credit line.

You will need to periodically go through a copy of your credit history to make sure that there are no mistakes or any out of date information. If there is, it is essential that you contact them to correct any fault that may discover.

Auto insurance companies can also give discounts to clients whose vehicles have safety features fitted either as standard or as add-ons. These would include items such as airbags, anti-lock braking systems, automatic seatbelts, vehicle tracking devices and any other safety or anti-theft devices that would reduce the insurance companies’ risk.

These features are only good if you actually remember to inform the insurance company that you have them fitted to your vehicle. They will not offer you the substantial discounts available, if they do not know which features’ have been fitted to your car.

Spending a little time and diligence in going through what coverage you actually have at the moment can save a large amount of money on your premium. There are several items you could consider removing or reducing from your policy.

One of these that can save you a couple of hundred dollars per year will be your uninsured motorist cover. This additional coverage is intended to pay out should you be involved in an accident with a motorist who has no legal insurance or alternatively is under-insured.

This sounds like sensible coverage that will be helpful if you should be involved in such an incident. However, when you think about it carefully, if you already have good insurance that gives you comprehensive cover, you are actually already insured for this possibility. Therefore, why would you need to spend $150 or $200 a year on additional insurance for something that your main insurance already covers you for?

You need to also carefully question your agent about available discounts from various auto insurers. Each company has its own rules and ideas of who they think is a good risk for auto insurance.

Some companies may favor senior citizens; others may prefer anyone who is over 50 years of age. Some companies prefer one vehicle manufacturer over another, as we mentioned above some are very interested in your credit history. It is important to figure out any advantages that you may have to offer the auto insurance company, that they may consider will reduce their risk of there being a claim.

In reality, it is very difficult to know just what any individual insurance company is looking for in a client. This is why you need a highly competent insurance agent who can assess your personal situation, and recommend several companies that prefer the type of client that you are.

You are giving people a terrible, terrible advice. UIM coverage is not made redundant by comprehensive coverage. Please read the insurance policy carefully before dispensing such dangerous “tips”.
