AARP Gives Oregon Seniors New Way To Save On Auto Insurance

August 14th, 08

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is a non-profit organization designed to serve the interests of its members, all of whom are individuals older than 50. This year, the AARP once again brings its valuable classes on safer driving to Oregon seniors. The classes, which will start up again in the middle of July, will guarantee participating senior citizens a reduction in their auto insurance rates.

The AARP started offering these classes almost 30 years ago, in 1979, in response to statistics showing that individuals over the age of 55 got into many more automobile accidents than those in the 25-54 year-old demographic. Unlike new and young drivers, who tend to get into accidents because of their inexperience and tendency to take needless risks, the over-55 group was shown to get into many of its accidents because of physical problems correlated with aging. These problems include progressive decreases in seniors’ ability to hear and see hazards when they’re on the road.

AARP’s Safe Driving Course focuses on the driving needs of seniors, helping older drivers adjust to and compensate for the aforementioned problems. The course helps seniors deal with the challenge of driving with slightly reduced vision and hearing, and teaches senior alternate ways to sense hazards. However, individuals of any age can take the class.

The biggest benefit of the class, for drivers over 55, lies in that auto insurance providers within the state of Oregon are required by law to offer seniors who successfully take the class a discount on their auto insurance rates. This law compensates for the fact that senior citizens are generally charged higher rates–due to the aforementioned statistical likelihood of accidents among older drivers. The guaranteed reduction in rates will also more than offset the class’s low cost: a mere $10.
