Teenagers And Car Insurance
September 29, 2008
Teenagers are notorious for having ridiculously high car insurance premiums. Most of us just accept this fact as is and just do not bother to give it a second thought. The fact is, insurance premiums do not always have to be so much for teenage drivers and by looking around and doing a bit of work, those premiums can be greatly reduced.
The first task is to find an insurance company that does not hold all teenagers in the same negative light. While there are a handful of bad seeds out on the road many teens are responsible and just want a fair deal. As parents you can help the teenage driver in your home to find a better deal on teenagers auto insurance and show that he or she is responsible just by following a few rather simple steps; most of which should already be practiced.
Learn The Rules Of The Road
Sure, every driver must pass some form of written exam and then a driving test but does that knowledge really remain after the licenses is granted? Even most adults have a hard time remembering all the nuisances and laws to driving so how can teens. It’s pretty simple; actually, it just takes involvement and refresher courses.
Find out if the insurance company is willing to give discounts for those teen drivers who enrol in driving courses. This is a great way to save money while providing peace of mind that your teen knows the rules.
It’s All About Involvement
Take an active role in your teens driving. Ride with him or her occasionally to make sure that their skills have not become lax and they still understand the importance of obeying the speed limit and other seemingly unimportant rules.
Be a role model for your teen as well. If the teen sees you tailgating, speeding, or exhibiting road rage then they will probably emulate that behaviour. Talk to the young driver about the dangers of drinking and driving along with drug use. While it is difficult to discuss such topics it just may hit home and reduce the chance that your teen take part is such reckless behaviour.
By adding the teenager to your coverage you can pass on any discounts you may receive. Tell the new driver how much their portion costs even if they are not required to pay for it. Talk to them about what they can do in way of discounts and saving money on the coverage. They will feel a sense of responsibility about the insurance and will drive safely to avoid raising costs especially if the household budget is already tight.
Teenage drivers have much to learn about the world and about insurance. By keeping the lines of communication open and giving them a sense of responsibility concerning payment and the rates they are far more likely to drive safe. By showing that the teenager is reliable and responsible on the road insurance companies will be far more willing to pass on discounts and lower rates.
Get in contact with your insurance provider to discuss other ways to keep insurance cost down for teen drivers.
