How To Deal With Your Insurance Company

April 24th, 09

Dealing with your insurance company is a wonderful experience. Their amicable nature as they help you to select and purchase a policy inspires confidence and satisfaction. You continue to pay your premiums and feel confident that you are completely protected.

Then something happens, and it is one of the main reasons you purchased a policy in the first place. Once you file for a large claim, dealing with your insurance company can get a little more difficult. Here are some ways to make sure that dealings with you insurance company go as smoothly as possible.

Know Your Policy

Before you buy your policy, you want to know it inside and out. This means that you want to understand what is and is not covered. You do not want there to be any misunderstanding because this could cost you dearly later. Taking copious notes regarding what is covered by your policy will help you understand and remember your coverage in detail. Take the time to read through your policy yourself. This may be a lengthy and laborious process, but you need to know exactly what your policy says.

Make sure that all the information that you presented about yourself is entirely factual and do not leave any information out. Incorrect or incomplete answers could cause problems later. If your insurance company can assert that you misrepresented yourself in some manner on the application then they may be able to go so far as to rescind your entire policy. This can be especially problematic if a misrepresentation is discovered after you file a large claim.

When You File A Claim

The first step is to take out all those notes you have on your policy to make sure you understand all the parts of your policy that apply to this claim. You will need to prove your claim so start building up your collection of evidence. This may include photographs of the damage or loss and other records of it.

Get an independent expert’s evaluation of your losses. Your insurance company will have their own experts, but you want an unbiased expert to evaluate losses for you.

Keep a record of all your dealings with your insurance company too. You want to have a listing of every time you and your company were in contact as well as the names of the individuals you talked to, their job titles, and their phone numbers. You should include the date and time of each interaction as well as a brief but thorough description of what was discussed.

The reasoning behind this communications log is that insurance companies do not always have one employee handling the claim from start to finish. The claim may be passed from person to person so you will want a clear record of who said what during its processing.

Make sure that you do not exaggerate your claim. You want to represent yourself and your claim accurately to your insurance company. Any misrepresentation of the facts could result in problems up to and including the dismissal of your claim.

If The Claim Is Disputed

Courts tend to review policies in your favor. The details of your policy are usually read and interpreted in such a manner that will help you to file your claim successfully. The criteria for including a claim will be reviewed in as inclusive a way as possible in most instances and limitations will be read in the opposite manner. The company that created the policy will most likely be the one to pay for ambiguities in the policy.

Knowing how to deal with your insurance company is a matter of knowing your policy and knowing exactly what is happening every step of the way. When you file a claim, knowledge is your ally.
