NJ Bill Could Lead Autism Insurance Law

July 15th, 09

The presentation of a new measure, intent on greatly expanding the current health insurance parameters for the treatment of autism and other developmental disabilities is making the rounds in the New Jersey legislature and could soon become state law.

This bill would require insurance companies to cover the costs of autism treatments that are deemed “medically necessary.” This would include various physical, speech, and occupational therapies, and also behavioral intervention protocols.

It has already passed the Assembly. The decision came right after a proposal was approved by the New Jersey Senate that would place a cap on coverage of about $36,000 annually for those patients who are 21 years old and younger.

The final hurdle for the bill is approval by Governor Jon Corzine; but there is every indication that he is ready to sign it into law. This would make New Jersey the fourteen state in the U.S to mandate such coverage requirements.

Supporters say that by requiring health insurer to provide coverage for autistic therapy, especially young children, provides a substantive impact on how they respond to treatments and what benefits can be obtained.

According to a study conducted by the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 94 New Jersey children have the disorder. This is compared national average of 1 in 152.

At present, autism is considered a genetic disorder. Unfortunately, its cause has not yet been discovered and there is no known cure. Symptoms of autism vary widely, but can include weak speech, poor eating ability, inappropriate laughing or crying, and self-inflicted injuries.

Some people with autism have trouble learning how to do even basic tasks. Supporters of the bill say insurers will not typically cover needed treatment, or if they do, the coverage is for a limited time. The opponents, while being sympathetic, make the case that this new measure would increase the healthcare costs of already burdened businesses and individual citizens.
