Understanding Temporary Health Insurance

November 30th, 09

The sea of health insurance options seems endless. There are types of health insurance that are slight variations on the norm and others that are radically different. The fact that they exist indicates that they are plans that a sufficient number of individuals think are worthwhile. One such unique plan is known as temporary insurance. It may not be for everyone but it might be for you.

What Is Temporary Health Insurance?

Temporary health insurance is health insurance that provides coverage for a short period of time. Ordinarily, this period of time is between 6 months to a year although it can be as short as 30 days in some cases. This brief effective period is the distinguishing feature of temporary life insurance.

Other than this, policies are similar to the more common life insurance policies in many ways. With temporary life insurance you get your insurance card, set deductibles, and the necessary limits on services. However, its coverage limitations can extend far beyond those of the limitations you would find with more common long term policies.

The Limits Of Temporary Health Insurance Coverage

Temporary health insurance coverage does have some noteworthy limitations. Pre-existing conditions, for the most part, are not covered by these short term insurance policies. In this case, pre-existing conditions are any medical conditions or issues that were recognized before the health insurance policy was activated.

Temporary health insurance may not provide coverage for medical care that is deemed preventative. Its focus lies more in shielding the policy holder from major medical problems. While this type of policy will not shield you from all the costs that you may incur from sudden medical problems, it will insulate you to some degree from larger medical issues that come with larger bills.

If you have temporary health insurance then you need to be aware that you will not have guaranteed health insurance coverage. The guarantee of this type of coverage is that the coverage it bestows upon you is guaranteed regardless of your state of health. Temporary insurance coverage cannot give you this type of guarantee.

What Is The Point Of Short Term Health Insurance?

This sounds like a hefty number of limitations and trouble to go through for a policy that will not last very long so what is the point of all this? The main group that is thought of as an ideal candidate pool for temporary insurance is that of individuals who are currently between jobs. They need coverage but cannot get it from an employer anymore. Still, they may not need long term coverage so temporary health insurance serves to protect them in the meantime.

In short, temporary insurance policies are the perfect short term solution for individuals who are in good health and who need coverage for major health problems but who only need it for a short period of time. In the end, these policies are less expensive and easier to get than their long term counterparts. They do carry with them their share of benefits.

Temporary health insurance is a bit of a niche market. If you are someone who could use temporary coverage then temporary health insurance is something you should look into. If you are not in this category then you can file this information away just in case you ever find yourself in the position where you need new health insurance but only for a short period of time.
