According to new research, workers are increasingly opting to forgo insurance benefits from their employers so they can instead have bigger paychecks. Nearly 40 percent of companies say it’s a growing trend for employees to opt out of benefits like pension plans, life insurance or income protection in order to take home more money.

Another 18 percent of companies polled say they’ve also seen a drop in the amount of money staff are willing to contribute to their pension. “We’re witnessing several concerning trends that would point to many employees currently taking a very short-term view of their financial situation,” Marketing Officer Marco Forato told The Press Association. “Although there’s no denying that a lot of people are struggling financially as a result of the recession, workers should only opt out of long-term financial benefits as a last resort. It is vital that employees instead seek to protect themselves and their dependants by having robust financial cover in place.”

Officials say that while the workers may be getting a slight cash boost, they could be laying the groundwork for future financial problems. Not only are they jeopardizing their retirement plans but if they become ill and can’t earn a salary, their dependents will also be in trouble. Research shows that roughly one in three British workers would only be able to survive less than a month on the statutory sick pay which equates to about $100 a week.

McDonald’s Corp. says the health care overhaul may force many of its franchises to close. According to a report by the Kansas City Star, The Department of Health and Human Services is having some serious discussions with the fast food giant over impending changes in health insurance. New regulations force health plans to spend at least 80 percent of premium dollars on medical costs, which is what McDonald’s has an issue with. According to reports, the company worries that forcing these ratios will force franchises out of business. McDonald’s says it may have to change its current insurance plan.

Government officials say they’re working closely with business like McDonald’s to work through issues with the insurance ratios. “Medical-loss ratios are important because they demonstrate to the employer or family that premium dollars are being used on health care,” Illinois Department of Insurance Director Michael McRaith told the Kansas City Star. McRaith and other insuranc commissioners are developing guidelines on medical-loss ratios for the Obama administration. The government plans to issue guidance about the ratios by the end of the year so that companies have a better idea as to what is considered a medical expense and what isn’t.

McDonald’s isn’t the only company with issues regarding the medical-loss ratios. Some say smaller companies with a younger workforce typically have higher turnovers which makes spending 80 percent of premiums on medical services difficult. Most of McDonald’s franchisees tend to be operated as small businesses, but officials wouldn’t release details about benefits. “Health reform is complex, and some companies will have unique situations that make it challenging to comply with new regulations while meeting the needs of their work force,” Jim Winkler, managing principal with employee benefits consulting firm Hewitt Associates, told the Kansas City Star.

Everyone is seeking new and less expensive ways to get health insurance. The costs of having health insurance are often too taxing but the risks of not having health insurance are so potentially devastating that not having health insurance is inconceivable.

With all the health insurance options out there, there has to be one that is perfect for you. Membership organizations often offer health insurance. Should you get your health insurance through a membership organization?

Defining A Membership Organization

A membership organization is a collective of people that gives support in the form of resources and benefits to individuals all linked by some common element. One example of such a group is the Writers Guild of America. This group has the goal of supplying professional writers with resources and benefits.

One of the benefits that they offer is health insurance. The availability of health insurance from such organizations is tightly regulated so that only those who are appropriate members can join and take advantage of these benefits. Still, there are a great many organizations out there that provide benefits to those in the field with which they are associated.

Is Health Insurance Through A Membership Organization The Best Option?

As with so many insurance questions, the answer depends on the person asking the question. The easiest and arguably best way for most people to get health insurance is through an employer. The majority of employers offer health insurance to their employees that is attainable without a health exam. The employer also usually pays a portion of the premium, reducing the cost for the employee.

Many individuals, on the other hand, do not have employers. The number of self-employed individuals is growing and they do not have this option. Self-employed individuals either purchase health insurance directly from an insurance company or obtain health insurance through a membership organization.

Directly purchased health insurance will require physical exams and testing to determine if the individual will be approved for the policy. The premiums will be higher as well as there is no employer to contribute.

Instead of purchasing health insurance directly, consider insurance through a membership organization. Like insurance through an employer, the costs will be spread out over the group instead of falling squarely on the individual.

Lower premiums are possible when you become part of this type of health insurance plan just like with plans through an employer. Medical exams may be required and pre-existing conditions may or may not be covered but, in most cases, this is a better choice than an individual health insurance policy.

How Do You Choose A Membership Organization?

First, you need to find an organization that will accept you as a member. Second, you need to find out what kind of coverage the organizations that will accept you will provide. This leads to an inevitable part of the health insurance procurement process.

You have to shop around. There are no standard plans that all membership organizations offer so you could find a myriad of different policies. You just have to sort through them until you find one that will work well for you.

Health insurance through a membership organization is not for everyone but for many it is the best option available. Belonging to a group gives you more clout and allows the group to bear the burden instead of the individual. The self-employed do not have to be alone when it comes to health insurance.

When you look for a new job then insurance matters are probably not the foremost thoughts on your mind. While you will be thinking about maintaining your health insurance coverage, you will be more focused on advancing your career, trying something new, or just enjoying gainful employment.

You may not need one more thing to think about when you head into a job interview but insurance issues should be a consideration when you are contemplating that new job.

The Impact Of Insurance

The availability of insurance is a part of your compensation package when you accept a new job. It can be a smart idea to choose a job with a slightly lower salary if the employer offers exceptional health insurance benefits. Similarly, it may not be worth it to make a little more money if you will have to take on an ineffective insurance plan to get your pay raise.

Health insurance is a benefit that can pay off big time and you want to have the best coverage possible. While this is far from your only consideration when you look for a new job, it is something you should keep in mind. Without good insurance a higher paying job is not always an attractive prospect.

Investigate This Employer’s Health Insurance Plan Offerings

You will want to know the details of the health insurance plan that is available to you through this employer. You, of course, want to know if this health insurance plan provides good coverage. You will want to take into account any special needs, costs, or pre-existing conditions that you have and see how they will fit into this health insurance plan.

A good health insurance plan is not enough. You need to know what the premiums for this health insurance plan are as well. Some health insurance plans are good because you are paying so much to get them. You want to know what the premiums are because this can be as important as the amount of coverage that the plan provides.

Are Vision And Dental Insurance Available?

You will want to consider these types of insurance the same way you would consider general health insurance. Is there coverage for these areas? Is there good coverage for these areas? How much are the premiums? Again, high premiums can make even excellent insurance coverage less attractive.

You also want to consider your foreseeable needs in the areas of dental insurance and vision insurance. Is the need for braces or other pricey orthodontic work in your future? Will vision insurance with high premiums be sufficiently offset by how much you will get out of this type of insurance? Consider these questions. If you know that you have significant expenses coming in these areas then you may find that even high premiums could be worth it.

What about other options?

How will you pay for health expenses that are not covered by your basic insurance plan? A prospective employer may offer a health savings account option to address this concern. It can be used to pay for out-of-pocket expenses in this area tax free.

Keeping insurance issues in mind when you look for a new job is important. Health insurance makes up a fair portion of your benefits package with many jobs so review this benefit. It could convince you to take a job or to pass on one.
