Did you know that your credit score can impact what your insurance company charges you? Many companies review your credit report to determine the rate you’ll pay. If your less-than-perfect credit is causing you to pay more for car insurance, here are some steps to take.

Review Your Credit Report: Make sure your credit report is accurate. Every consumers in the US is allowed free access to their credit report every twelve months from each of the three main credit reporting agencies. Visit AnnualCreditReport.com for access to yours. Look for any inaccuracies that could be forcing your credit score to be lower than it should be. Make sure there are no signs of identity theft.

Pay Delinquent Accounts: Eliminating any outstanding debts that are in collection will help improve your credit score. Make sure to pay your bills by the due date to avoid an even lower credit score.

Ask for Proof: If your insurance company charges you  higher rates based on your poor credit score they are required to tell you based on the Fair Credit Reporting Act. If they tell you that be sure to ask for proof. They must give you a copy of the credit report they used to obtain the information about your credit score.

Check Around: Quotes vary with different insurance companies. If you’re not pleased with the quote you receive from one company, check around. You may get a better rate for car insurance from someone else.

In a recent development, the American International Group (AIG) has held off releasing payments to many of its real estate ventures. As reported in the Wall Street Journal, the move by the company carries with it the potential to do serious damage to the credibility and financial stability of both the banks and developers involved.

Drivers in the state of Texas are facing a double-whammy: gas prices are higher than they’ve been in years, and, now, auto insurance rates have increased as well.

Earlier today, the state’s biggest automobile insurance provider–State Farm Mutual–announced to Texas Department of Insurance that it intends to raise rates by a mean of 2.4% throughout Texas. This change, scheduled to take effect at the end of October, 2008, will affect approximately 2 million State Farm-insured drivers.

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is a non-profit organization designed to serve the interests of its members, all of whom are individuals older than 50. This year, the AARP once again brings its valuable classes on safer driving to Oregon seniors. The classes, which will start up again in the middle of July, will guarantee participating senior citizens a reduction in their auto insurance rates.

The Association of British Insurers has announced recently that motor insurance fraud has taken a staggering leap this year due in large part to the credit crunch. Strapped for cash, drivers are turning to fraudulent claims as a way to get some much needed dollars. The risks associated with making a fraudulent insurance claim seems to be worth it for those drivers who report their vehicle damaged or even stolen.

The amount of these claims has jumped to 70% over the last four years which is alarming to industry experts. Largely due to a record amount of consumer debt and the lack of available credit lines this jump translates to 24,000 false claims from the 14,000 recorded four years ago.

The San Jose Mercury News newspaper has published an editorial saying that current government efforts to solve the nation’s housing crisis simply won’t get the job done.

The newspaper noted that the feds have been encouraging mortgage companies to do what they can to prevent home foreclosures by renegotiating difficult loans. However, as the newspaper states, the voluntary campaign hasn’t worked so far.
