The Best Cities To Work If You Want To Be Happy

February 11th, 11

Bad bosses are everywhere, but according to a new poll from CareerBliss.com there are some cities that are full of happier workplaces than others. The site just released it’s first list of the country’s top 50 cities for workers. To gather this information they polled 200,000 employees all over the country to find out about eight specific factors of workplace happiness. They looked at things like insurance benefits, grown opportunity and job security.

According to CareerBliss CTO Matt Miller, cities with a bigger tech influence and those that are the hubs of growing IT industries were happier than others. “Cities that are tech strongholds tend to have populations with strong educational backgrounds who are pulling in high salaries,” Miller told Yahoo! News. Here’s a look at the top five:

1. San Jose, California: Employees polled here say they are more satisfied with their income, benefits and how they are able to balance careers and life.

2. San Fransisco, California: This city neighbors the number one placeholder so you can imagine that many of those polled felt similarly. The median income here is $74,745.13 and job security is fairly high.

3. Jacksonville, Florida: While the average income is about $20,000 less than those in the number two slot, employees here have figured out how to balance work and life. “We actually found a trend that resounded through a few surprising cities that included Jacksonville and El Paso (No. 7). These cities tended to rank high in terms of job growth opportunities — people likely to recommend their company to others — and work-life balance,” Miller told Yahoo! News.

4. Miami, Florida: The average income in Miami is actually a bit higher than Jacksonville and the job security level is high.

5. Washington DC: There is also a high tech demand here as the need for government security increases.

The study also showed that communities around military bases impact the happiness level. They tend to be happier because they have a higher level of job security.

Many Australians Caught Without Flood Insurance

February 3rd, 11

Devastating floods destroyed homes and lives in Australia recently. But the bad news continues to flow in as officials say about half of the homeowners impact by the flooding in the eastern part of the country did not have insurance. According to the Herald Sun, the homeowners did not have riverine and they may not have known that they wouldn’t be covered.

That’s why the country’s Assistant Treasurer Bill Shorten is pushing for easier-to-understand language in insurance policies. “There are a lot of views from consumers groups who are frustrated that home and content policies are hieroglyphic,” Shorten said according to the Herald Sun. He said many people don’t read their policies. “That does not make people silly … it just means the format they are submitted in is a highly inaccessible format.”

The government will assist uninsured homeowners, but Shorten wants to make sure homeowners can help themselves in the future. “It is important however the insurance industry makes it as easy as possible for people to know what they have got,” he told the Herald Sun. Even though about half of homeowners weren’t properly insured, officials say they were better prepared than many of the small businesses that were impacted by the flooding.

Fewer American Households Purchasing Life Insurance

December 3rd, 10

A new survey says fewer American households now carry life insurance than any time in the past 50 years. LIMRA, an insurance industry group conducted the survey and says that now millions of families are living without this important safety net. The study shows that 44% of households have an individual life insurance policy and 30% have no life insurance, whether from an employer or individual.

Families with the greatest need for coverage are typically viewed as those with children under the age of 18, and right now 11 million of those households are without life insurance protection. Premiums actually cost much less now than they did ten years ago. According to statistics from ING, a $500,000 20-year term policy costs about $25 a month.

There are several reasons experts say explain the drop in coverage including the recession, procrastination and fewer insurance agents. The cost is why 40% of families say they don’t have life insurance. But ironically, if the primary income earner in the family were to die, 40% say they would have trouble meeting expenses. Another reason is the lack of urgency that life insurance carries. It’s a voluntary purchase which is why many people delay buying it. “A lot of people really overlook the whole need (for insurance) until they have a health condition, and then life insurance prices are out of reach for them,” Amy Danise, editor of Insure.com, told USA Today.

A final explanation for the lack of life insurance is the reduction in insurance agents. About four out of five families don’t have a life insurance agent, according to the study. Statistics show that in 2010 there were 184,873 affiliated agents. Two decades ago that number was nearly a quarter of a million. Since the days of door-to-door salesmen are gone, Byron Udell of AccuQuote tells USA Today, “there’s less of it getting bought.”

Powerful Storm Likely To Lead To Insurance Claims

October 27th, 10

A powerful storm rolling through the Midwest on to the east coast is creating winds equal to those of a category 3 hurricane, according to weather experts. ABC news says the storm developed gusts up to 81 miles per hour, impacting residents spanning from Illinois to Tennessee. Funnel clouds, forceful winds and powerful rain were all a part of the system.

Because of this strong weather, Ohio Department of Insurance Director Mary Jo Hudson told the state’s residents to take precautionary measures and review steps for filing insurance claims. According to Cincinnati.com, Hudson advises those with damage to:

* Call your as soon as possible.

* Protect your property and salvage what you are able to.

* Inspect property and cars for damage following the storm.

* Photoraph any damage in case you decide to file claims.

* Provide your with up-to-date contact information.

* Use written estimates to back-up claims.

* Only use reputable contractors.

* Don’t pay for repairs entirely up front.

* Review contractors with the Better Business Bureau to make sure they don’t have any outstanding complaints.
